10 RULES FOR A SUCCESSFUL MANAGER
(Common sense is the key to success: Mr. C. L. Johnson, world famous Lockheed aircraft designer)

 

1. LEADERSHIP - YOU NEED ONE LEADER - SOMEONE WHO SEES THE BIG PICTURE RATHER THAN FOCUSING ON DAY-TO-DAY DETAILS.

2. TEAMWORK - THE LEADER MUST HAVE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SELECTING HIS (OR HER) OWN TEAM. ONCE HE (OR SHE) HAS PUT TOGETHER THIS (OR HER) TEAM, THE LEADER SHOULD ALLOW IT TO GO AHEAD WITH THE PROJECT WITH A MINIMUM OF INTERFERENCE.

3. DELEGATION - A LEADER MUST DELEGATE BOTH AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY. A LEADER SHOULD NEVER LOOK OVER HIS (OR HER) SHOULDER AND NEVER INTERFERE WITH THE PROJECT.

4. MANAGE BY CHARISMA - PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO WORK FOR A LEADER WHO IS DIRECTING EVERY DETAIL OF A PROJECT.

5. BE PRACTICAL - THE LEADER SHOULD EXPECT MISTAKES AND CORRECT THEM AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. TURTLES DO NOT MAKE PROGRESS WITHOUT STICKING THEIR NECKS OUT. SOMETIMES THEY GET THEIR HEADS CHOPPED OFF, BUT IF THEY ALWAYS KEPT THEM INSIDE THEIR SHELLS, THEY WOULD STARVE TO DEATH.

6. TIGHT SCHEDULE - REMEMBER TIME IS MONEY. IN FACT, GIVE YOURSELF LESS TIME THAN YOU THINK YOU WILL ACTUALLY NEED.

7. DEMAND RESULTS - WORKAHOLICS WHO COME IN AT 6:OO A.M. AND DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL 9:00 P.M. ARE NOT NECESSARILY YOUR BEST EMPLOYEES. AN EIGHT HOUR WORK DAY IS USUALLY ENOUGH FOR THE BEST EMPLOYEE.

8. BE ETHICAL - DEMAND INTEGRITY FROM BOTH YOURSELF AND THOSE WHO SERVE WITH YOU. YOU MAY LOSE SOME CONTRACTS BY STICKING TO YOUR STANDARDS, BUT IN THE LONG RUN YOU WILL RETAIN THE RESPECT OF YOUR PEERS AND YOUR INDUSTRY.

9. REWARDS AND PUNISHMENT - REWARD THOSE WHO DO WELL AND PUNISH THOSE WHO DO NOT. TAKE THE TIME TO SAY 'THANK YOU'. GIVE PEOPLE THE CREDIT FOR THEIR SUCCESSES. NO ONE WANTS TO WORK FOR A CRITICAL BOSS.

10. ENJOY YOUR WORK - WORK HARD AND ENJOY THE RESULTS. LEARN TO NOT TAKE YOUR WORK HOME WITH YOU. NEVER CHANGE AN EMPLOYEE'S VACATION PLANS EXCEPT IN AN EMERGENCY.
